It is a special recognition of the Bremen approach to promote Car-Sharing as supplement to cycling and public transport – in order to relieve our urban neighbourhoods from the pressure of parking" Senator Dr. Joachim Lohse states. "Energy-efficient mobility works only in team play", the responsible Senator emphasizes the collaboration with the Car-Sharing-operator cambio in Bremen und the intermodal cooperation with public transports and cycling.
"The on-going growth of Car-Sharing proofs an increasing need of modern mobility services. Customers want short ways to the car and a ‘clean fleet’ with a wide variety of cars. With an average CO2-emission of 107g/km, cambio customers are happy to combine the choice with energy efficiency."
The Bremen concept around the Action Plan and its implementation with the network of intermodal ‘mobil.punkt’ Car-Sharing stations was selected by an independent jury out of 224 projects all over Europe. Bremen has ambitious targets: 20,000 Car-Sharers shall be reached by 2020 – replacing more than 6,000 private cars and creating more space for pedestrians and bicycles.
The "European Sustainable Energy Award" is part of the European Sustainable Energy Week – organised since 2006 by the European Commission and many NGOs. "In particular, we like the clear targets of a municipality to consequently integrate Car-Sharing into local parking management. Also the integration of Car-Sharing into urban transport strategies with the bicycle and the tram in Bremen is a special example for other European cities „jury member Dave Keating – journalist of "European Voice" emphasized in his speech.
Within the Interreg NSR project CARE-North, the implementation and policy goals were successfully transferred to the project partner Aberdeen City Council, which led to a first call for tender and start of the local scheme in April 2011. The Car Club joined more than 300 people in the first 6 month!
The Bremer Car-Sharing Action Plan was the first municipal thematic plan for Car-Sharing in Europe. The implementation with the “mobil.punkt“ stations was already awarded by the German motor club with the „ADAC Städtepreis“ (2006), with the German Transport Planning Award (2010) and the Austrian VCÖ Mobility Award (2011). Also, Bremen was selected by an International Jury as “Urban Best Practice Example” for the World EXPO 2010 in Shanghai/China.
