NSSP: Great Danes

"A Royal Affair" is selected as the Danish film to participate in the 2013 Oscar-nomination. The restoration of the 1700-century Denmark was assisted with digital expertise from West Danish filmmakers and support from the West Danish Film Fund.

Directed by Nikolaj Arcel, the film tells the story of a young queen (Alicia Vikander), who is married to an insane king. Falling secretly in love with her physician (Mads Mikkelsen), together they start a revolution that changes a nation forever.

'A Royal Affair' premiered at Cannes 2012. Post production was supported by West Danish Film Fund at North Sea Screen Partners member Filmby Aarhus. "We are very proud of the nomination. The international focus is important for local companies and talent that has been on the film. And it means something to draw other big productions to the area, "says Filmby Aarhus manager Carsten Holst, who is responsible for the West Danish Film Fund.

The film initially ran against Bille August's "Marie Krøyer" and Susanne Bier's "The Bald Hairdresser" (Love Is All You Need) in the race to be nominated Danish film. Now, the battle has begun to become one of the nine films included in the final race for an Oscar for best non-English language films.

"A Royal Affair" had Danish premiere on 29 March and is seen by a cinema audience of just over half a million. At the Berlin Film Festival attracted "A Royal Affair" enthusiasm and won Silver Bears for best drama and best screenplay.

The film has also just won the audience award in the World Cinema category at AFI Fest 2012.
